Scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago have successfully used stem cells to reattach teeth to the jaw bone. The stem cells were taken from the periodontal ligament of molars extracted from mice. They grew them in an incubator and seeded them back onto the root surfaces of extracted molars. The new "seeded" molars were reinserted into the tooth sockets of rats. After 2 to 4 months the stem cells aligned to form a new ligament attaching the teeth to the bone. In the correct amounts, fluoride can make teeth stronger and help bones in the treatment of osteoporosis. If the amounts of fluoride are too high - it can cause a whole host of problems. Scientists at Florida State University have developed a device that can detect fluoride at very low levels. Most current devices cannot even distinguish between fluoride and other anions found in water. This device uses naphthalene diimide to change color when it interacts with fluoride. This compound reacts specifically with even the smallest amounts of fluoride. This device could be used to help make drinking water safer around the world, and more beneficial by helping to maintain the correct levels of fluoride. Scientists at the university of Groningen have unraveled the mechanism of the enzyme that makes dental plaque stick to teeth. Now that they have discovered how this glucansucrase enzyme works, they should be able to come up with a compound that will inhibit the enzyme. If they are able to add that compound to toothpaste or even candy - then this may help dentists win the war against tooth decay. Here is a link to the complete article....
